Of course I get spam, I have a blog where comments can be left, but what amuses me is the spam I get. I (so far) have managed to avoid abusive or unpleasant comments, but I have some amusing comment spammers who leave spam comments, and me scratching my head attempting to figure out what on earth they mean.
I use Akismet and AVH First Defense Against Spam in my blog to trap spam (and it’s VERY successful for me), but I still go through my spam folder to make sure that legitimate comments aren’t trapped as spam, and determine which block IP addresses to block from sites that are spamming me (I also refer to Project Honeypot to determine comment spammers).
I thought I’d share some of the more WTF spam I get for a laugh:

And then I have a MRA comment/blog announcement, that was thankfully listed as spam straight away. I thought I’d just list the content and not the blog address because there is an important point to make:
I am an American man, and I have decided to boycott American women. In a nutshell, American women are the most likely to cheat on you, to divorce you, to get fat, to steal half of your money in the divorce courts, don’t know how to cook or clean, don’t want to have children, etc. Therefore, what intelligent man would want to get involved with American women?
American women are generally immature, selfish, extremely arrogant and self-centered, mentally unstable, irresponsible, and highly unchaste. The behavior of most American women is utterly disgusting, to say the least.
And my important point is: Pot meet Kettle.
Let’s reverse the whole thing and put “men” in place of all the uses of “women”:

Perhaps the problem is the blog author and not “women” as some sort of monolithic entity in the US (or any other nation). I know people of both (all?) genders who may cheat, may (or have) divorce[ed] someone, gotten fat, taken money at court (how dare someone want to have money to support children or themselves after a relationship breaks down), doesn’t know how to cook or clean, and who don’t want to have children.
I also know people who would never cheat on their partners, would do everything they can do to avoid divorce, who can’t put on weight, who won’t stand up for themselves in court, can cook banquets, clean all the things, and are desperate to have children.
Don’t make your issues the issues of 50% of the human race – address them and then I don’t know, fucking communicate with your partners about your expectations and actually negotiate like an adult about what is reasonable and what isn’t… and then decide whether or not you want to be in a relationship with them. Get into the fucking 21st century and don’t expect a wife who believes that the 1950s was the highlight of femininity to fall in love with you and then to worship the ground you walk upon. The world has moved on, it’s time you did too.
I think the bulk of those spam comments are auto-generated in the same way you can get auto-generated essays. They give loose and non-specific praise, but *almost* look legitimate. As you said, I think it’s to raise the profiles of their own sites.
